Simplify Adding Insurance After Treatment Has Begun

I would like to request a simpler workflow for adding a patient’s insurance when insurance information is added on after treatment has already started.
Currently, it is very difficult to get the newly added insurance to properly kick-start a claim and appear on the patient’s ledger. The current workaround requires us to transfer a balance from the patient to the new insurance company and then transfer it back again in order to get the system to process things correctly.
This creates unnecessary activity on the patient’s ledger and makes the account history look confusing. More importantly, I don’t feel comfortable moving patient balances around simply to get the system to recognize and process a new insurance claim. Every additional manual balance transfer creates another opportunity for human error.
Ideally, there would be a straightforward way to add insurance to an existing patient account.
This would make the process much cleaner, reduce the risk of posting errors, and make the patient ledger much easier for staff to understand and audit.
I feel like there has to be a simpler and safer way for the system to handle this scenario.

Agree. I’ve been told by support we still can’t create a new initial claim (only a procedure claim) via the new claim button in the ledger. We need to continue to use the transfer debt workaround for a very basic / common function (creating a new initial claim based on new / updated insurance info).

Hey Molly Burt thanks for the feedback. Are you using the new ledger? On the new ledger, you can start a new claim without transferring debt.
Here are the steps to do this:
- Select "New Claim".
- Choose the correct insurance company.
- Ensure the due date matches the DOS.
- Select the charge(s) corresponding to the CDT code needed on the claim.
- Override the amount to $0 and select "Save".

You will need to ensure to edit the claim to the appropriate fee before submitting the claim.
